Interior decor ideas: living and sleeping area

Interior decor ideas for a combined living and sleeping area
4. H&M, 5. H&M 6. H&M, 7. H&M, 8. H&M , 9. Ikea
10. Ikea, 11. Bellacor.com, 12. Ikea, 13. Ikea, 14. Ikea

In my previous post I announced the exciting news about my new apartment. I also warned you that there will be a lot of interior decorating on my blog and here we have the first interior decorating themed post of all the posts to come.

As I'm not rich and my parents won't be decorating my apartment, I will have to get most of the furniture second-hand. Luckily my aunt and her boyfriend are moving out of their apartment, back to my grandparents for some time, until they can find another small apartment to suit their needs, so I will be getting some things from them, at least for the time being. I also already have some things that might come in hand. D is happy to purchase things too, as he will be benefitting from them as well when he moves to Finland.

The lamp on my inspiration board resembles a lot the ceiling lamp I already have. I had it in my old room at my parent's place and when I moved to my grandparents' two years ago, I brought it with me. So I will definitely have a round lace ceiling lamp in my apartment.

D and I can't agree on a bed. As my apartment is only a little over 3 meters (about 9 feet 10764 inches) wide, I don't want a huge double bed to take over the entire living area. A sofa bed would be the most logical choice, since some seating would be useful for when I invite people over. However, sofa beds aren't the most comfortable beds available so we have been considering getting a real double bed. I'd be happy with 140x200cm (standard double size bed) but D thinks that it's too small. He wants a 160x200 cm (queen size) bed. Mind you, neither of us is really that wide so I don't get the point. According to D, a 20 cm (about 8 inches) difference won't be the end of the world but in a small apartment, 20 cm might result in not being able to place anything on the opposite side of the room because there would be no space to walk around. But if in the end we manage to agree on a bed, we will probably get a cute headboard wall decal like the one in the picture. Real iron frame beds are quite expensive so I love the idea, even if I say so myself.

I actually already own the bed sheets in the picture, D and I got them as a Christmas present from my grandparents.

Pillows are such an easy and inexpensive way to spice up the room. As long as I'll be living on my own for the most part, I'll definitely be creating a more feminine feel to my home with pink, sequins, sparkle, lace and what not. My home is supposed to represent my style and until D moves in, or we move to a different place together, I won't be hiding my love for all things pink and sparkly.

As you know, I love knitting, and as soon as I'm done with all my other projects, I might knit (or even learn to crochet!) a blanket like the one in the picture.

I'm so happy that my aunt loves mirrors as much as I do. I had been considering buying the big Ikea mirror either new or second-hand but as it turns out, my aunt has the same one and she is very happy to let me have it for the time being. Saves me money and saves them (and my grandparents) storage space. It's a win-win situation for everyone.

Usually I like sleeping in dark rooms so dark curtains would seem like an obvious choice but dark and heavy curtains would make my apartment look so much smaller. There's only one (big) window so light curtains are the smartest choice. The lace curtains in the picture are from Ikea but my mum might have simple white curtains hanging around somewhere. At least in the beginning I'm happy to accept any donations to save my little money. I'll upgrade when my budget allows me to.

My parents have an old dining table, much like the one in the picture, stored somewhere and I'll be getting that one. It's a nice table and it should match the wooden floors quite well.

Not sure how smart it is for me to get any real plants, as I tend to forget to water them, but I think I'll manage one or two plants. I'm also thinking of growing my own herbs, and the cute little greenhouse from Ikea would be perfect. Of course, it's not the first thing on my list, but it's cute.

I will be getting two chairs matching the dining table and that's about the amount I need on a daily basis, but for when I have guests, some fold-up chairs would be nice. These chairs from Ikea are quite price-y for my budget at the moment but perhaps I can find them second-hand. (on a side note, I hate how messily I added the picture to the board... but can't be bothered to fix it anymore)

Fairy lights are such a cliche at the moment, considering the amount of fairy light pictures I can find on weheartit and the like but I'll risk being cliche because I think they are so cute. I might feel different in a few years but who cares!

Among other things I'll be getting from my aunt, is a bean bag chair. The one I'll be getting (or holding for them) is not as dark as this one though, it's more of a light-brown colour. Not the most comfy choice of seating, but it saves me from having to buy a sofa chair or something like that, and it's better than sitting on the floor.

A lot of mix and match, just like the clothes I wear, but I'll take the challenge gladly. Getting everything right away would be a little boring, now I'm forced to use my imagination and creativity. The bed is the only problem at the moment, but if I can't come up with anything else, my aunt has a bed that should last me until D comes to Finland and we can go bed shopping. (I already feel sorry for the salespeople at Ikea or wherever we head for mattresses and such)

Can you tell I've been nesting ever since I heard the news?

Let the adventure begin

Last time I wrote a more personal post was when things weren't working out the way I would've liked. This time however, it seems like I have finally found the right path and good things are coming my way. First of all, I got a job! Sure, it's a part-time cashiering job but it's a start and a possibility to set my own schedule. Then, the most incredible thing happened.

I am moving to my own little shoebox apartment in the beginning of next month. Less than three weeks to go.

My future home might be small and not situated in the city centre but I don't think a penthouse in an old 1910s building could make me happier than my little shoebox does. Got to start somewhere and at this stage of my life, a little studio apartment is all I need.

The thought of living on my own is very exciting. My initial reaction to the news was pure joy but soon it was changed to freaking out. Change is always a little scary and I've been worried about everything from beds to finances. Now I'm getting excited again and I've been browsing IKEA catalogue and such almost non-stop. You can expect a lot of interior decorating themed posts in the near future.

As good as this all is, the timing isn't the best. I should be putting all my time and energy into studying for my entrance exams but with all this excitement and meetings and training I've been doing for my job, I have barely opened my study book this week. Definitely not good as I need to know the book and the other study material by heart by early June, preferably earlier. Last year only 10-11% of the people who took the entrance exam got accepted. The pressure is on, but I'm ready to face it. Unlike last year, I'm actually motivated to do my best.

Why Breakfast at Tiffany's? Other than the fact that it's my favourite movie, I somehow feel like my own little Breakfast at Tiffany's adventure is starting to happen. Sans the call-girl looking for a rich husband part, and I'm afraid I won't get a cat. I'm no runaway teenage bride either. (and D isn't a kept man) But I will be looking for my own place in the world, trying to make the ends meet, dreaming of a place where I will feel safe. (not to mention that my little apartment will probably filled with mix and match thrift-store finds and hand-me-downs just like Holly's is) Too bad there's no Tiffany & Co store in Helsinki. However, I will drink milk from a champagne glass.

So there's the reason why it's been a little quiet on my blog. Big changes require a lot of processing but now my head is a little lighter again and I can get back to blogging and cramming for the exams. Good news for a change.

Make a statement

I know I know, we've been seeing statement necklaces ever since last summer but I am still looking for the perfect one, probably in vain, being as picky as I am. So here's an assembly of a few necklaces I came across while browsing the web.

The first one is from H&M, a pretty cute one, and cheap to boot. Definitely not bad, although I might be able to make one myself if needed.

The second one is a more sparkly one, from Mode Musthaves, a Dutch online store I hadn't discovered yet. This one isn't too expensive either but I'm not sure whether I should order it or not. After all, I should stick to my no shopping rule.

The third statement necklace is from Pieces, and otherwise it's lovely, but it's golden and I wear gold very rarely. No idea why, I just happen to be more of a silver-lover.

Last one on our list is is the most expensive one but it is very lovely. It's by Day Birger et Mikkelsen and I really like all the details even though it isn't quite as sparkly as I have been visioning.

Do you have any tips on where to score nice statement necklaces?

Cross stitch love

cross stitch bag inspiration

This started when I walked into the Episode store on Berenstraat in Amsterdam. They had a huge collection of floral cross stitch bags and something about them just caught my eye. At first I thought they were way too grandma-like, way too old-fashioned so I didn't buy one. Boy, have I been regretting that decision!

Of course this might just be that cross stitch is really ubiquitous in fashion at the moment and I have been brainwashed to like it as well. (happened with burgundy as well) But then, vintage has always attracted me. I loved Mary Poppins' carpet bag.

I do already own a little embroidered money pouch/evening bag, I got it from my step-grandmother for Christmas 2011 and I have been using it quite often as it fits nicely my passport, some cash and a bank card, as well as a phone and a lipstick. Perfect for evenings out, but now I have been craving for a bigger handbag as well.

I'm truly tempted to ask D to go to Episode and buy me one but my mother said I could also try making one myself. I did a little cross stitching 6-7 years ago and it's not difficult, but adding it to my older handbags might be challenging. Nothing is impossible though, and I certainly have enough time in my hands. I just have to figure out whether I think it's worth the time and effort or not.

Ah, seriously, I might be in love.

Pics of pixies

In the 11 facts post I mentioned that I don't know what to do with my hair. It really is a time for a haircut since the last time I went to the hairdresser's was in July.

Usually I'm quite conservative about my hair. I don't like big changes and I want to keep the style very simple. (or as my little sister and mother say, boring) Mostly that's because I've never been very keen on doing my hair other than to get it off my face with a big bun or a ponytail. I don't like keeping my hair loose, it gets in the way and starts bothering me.

Perhaps that's why it might be a little surprising that I haven't yet opted for a really short haircut. But as I stated above, I don't like big changes. Of course, my hair will grow back but I've always been a little scared of chopping my hair off because of the process of growing it out. Also, short hair requires regular visits to the hairdresser's, unless you can maintain the look and the cut with kitchen scissors.

And then there's the fact that D doesn't like women with short hair. Of course, I'm a modern woman and I will do anything I want with my hair, no matter what anyone else thinks, but it would be nice to know that he likes the look too. I've got his "permission" but I'm still a little worried that he will totally hate it. (but hey, I guess this is one of the occasions when being in a long distance relationship comes in handy... he won't have to see my hair cut if he doesn't want to)

What is your opinion? To cut or not to cut?

Knitting inspiration

Those who have been following me for the past weeks, might've noticed that I've taken up knitting. I'm currently knitting a woollen jersey, but I'm constantly gathering inspiration for my next project. And since a picture says more than a thousand words, I gathered a knitting inspiration board for you.

Oversized knits, traditional patterns and neutral and feminine colours are currently getting me excited. When knitting, I like to choose a good quality yarn and a relatively timeless pattern, because considering how much work knitting is, it's only logical to make sure that the finished product is worn more than once.

Besides, knitting is relaxing and very satisfactory. There's just something about making things with your own two hands.

How to make the most out of fast fashion?

Changing your shopping style isn’t easy. You might want to invest on more durable pieces but you are lacking some wardrobe essentials while your budget is tight. Let’s face it, these are hard times budget-wise. Luckily there are a few tips I can share with you, to help you make the most of fast fashion and your budget. These tips will also take you a few steps closer to having the wardrobe that perfectly reflects your personal style.

Know your wardrobe

Sounds simple, right? Unfortunately the case often is that people have no idea what their closet has swallowed. I am currently in the lucky position that I only have a certain amount of clothes in my closet: the clothes I brought from Finland and the clothes I have bought since so it was very easy for me to sort out the contents of my wardrobe. (although my project is only half-way done, my wardrobe in Finland still awaits me)

But for those who haven’t quite gotten there yet I recommend cleaning out your closet. Make a list of what you have, take pictures of everything and sort out the clothes you like. Pay attention to the clothes you love, how do they look, how do they feel, what kind of clothes fit your style and body etc. Donate away the clothes you don’t want to see in your closet, or if you are blessed with enough storage space, store them away. In a few years those clothes might be the ‘it’ thing once again.

Gather inspiration

This is the fun part. I currently have an inspiration folder on my computer, and as I browse blogs and websites, I gather pictures there. Pinterest is also a valuable tool for this.

Pay attention to what catches your eye. Colors, shapes, combinations etc. This should help you to figure out your own personal style, as long as you concentrate on the things you would wear yourself on everyday basis.

Make a shopping list

If you made a list (and took pictures) of the contents of your closet, this list will be a lot easier to make. What clothes do you already have? What clothes do you still need to finish off your perfect wardrobe? List them.

Note that this list isn’t the “groceries for the week” kind of shopping list. This is a long-term shopping list, unless you are lucky enough to have a limitless budget.

Figure out your budget

On which items are you going to skimp and which are investments? My advice is to invest on timeless classics that fit your style and skimp on the things that update your style to the latest trends. This is also a good time to consider where you are going to go shopping. Does it have to be a fast fashion store? Are you feeling up to some second-hand shopping? Do you have any friends in your size with the perfect sense of style? They might be interest in cleaning out their closets as well. Or do you have to buy it pre-made at all? Maybe your DIY-skills are good enough for making it yourself...

Do your research

Instead of rushing into the closest Zara or H&M, I advice you to take a look around, online or in person. See if anything catches your eye and see if that something is on your list. (don’t add it to your list, as tempting as that might be)

Also, pay attention to materials (wearability, it’s important to be able to wash the clothes in normal temperatures!) and country of origin. Search for possible customer reviews. Fit the clothes if possible, and/or return badly fitting clothes. Taking these steps will help you to figure out if it’s really worth the purchase. You don’t want to end up filling your closet with clothes you won’t wear or that are of lousy quality.

Usually it’s a good idea to sleep on it, and see if you still want the item the next day, or week. Good things come to those who wait, although in the world of fast fashion, the item you might want to purchase could be sold-out the next day. Still, this shouldn’t drive you to handing out your money immediately, it’s good to remember that there will be something similar in the next store. If not, too bad, it wasn’t meant to be. The disappointment will only last for so long, and soon you will be drooling over something else.

Take proper care of your wardrobe

So you found the things you wanted? Good, but that’s only the beginning. Now it’s your job to make the clothes (and shoes etc) last.

Every fashion-loving person should learn to do the laundry. I personally enjoy doing my own laundry, and so should you, if you want your clothes to last. Follow the instructions. Wash with similar colors. Don’t leave the clothes wet in the laundry machine and so on. If you wear the clothes for one day only and there are no obvious smells or stains, no need to throw it in the laundry bin. Hang the clothes on the balcony or outside, or indoors and open the window and brush them with a clothing brush. Personally I’d also advice to avoid perfumes and smoking, your clothes will stay fresh a lot longer without strong scents lingering on them. Washing puts a strain on the fabrics and less strain obviously results in clothes staying good for a longer time.

Laundry is one thing, storage is just as important. Don’t throw your clothes on the floor (so guilty of doing this!) and keep them folded or hanged neatly in your closet. Clean your closet regularly, you don’t want any dust or mould gathering in there with your clothes.

This was only a quick look into the matter, and I will be writing more posts about the subject. Hope these tips will be useful to you!

Autumn inspiration board

A reader asked if I could make an inspiration post for the autumn/fall season, and since I had been considering it myself already, I decided to grant her wish and make a post about things that inspire me currently.

This is the very first inspiration board I have ever made with Photoshop so bear with me, I'm sure that I'll eventually get better. Of course, I could've just as well used Polyvore, or just embed my pins from Pinterest but I thought this was more fun.

Anyways, this Autumn I have been increasingly inspired by the burgundy color, probably because it's so this season and it can be seen everywhere. (and there I thought I'm not enslaved by fashion) I already bought burgundy pants, but I want to get a burgundy lipstick too, as it would look great with my skin tone.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I have been also in the mood to wear pants. I'm quite happy that this season there are so many nicely fitting pants available. I'm not the biggest fan of low-waist pants so I'm overjoyed to find pants that rise higher and I don't have to tuck them up all the time. Slim fit and ankle-length pants seem to be the thing that catches my eye most often.

Even if I want my pants slim-fit (not too slim though, I do want to be able to sit!) I want my tops and cardigans slightly over-size. As the weather cools down I am going to wrap myself in big and soft clothes that keep me warm. Natural materials, wool and cotton are a must!

Out of natural materials I'm also into leather. Aged leather that is, in vintage-y brown and tan, in shoes and bags. Give me a pair of brogues and a satchel bag and I'm a happy girl. (brogues: check, satchel: on my wish list)

Vintage-feeling always inspires me, but it seems that during the Autumn season I'm most drawn to '30s and '40s. Back to school is always a big source of inspiration, I want plaid and tweed and skirts and so on. You get the idea.

Slouchy and boyish lines might be what I'm into what it comes to clothes, but in details I am very feminine. Flower patterns, lace details, pearls and colors. Burgundy is of course a feminine color, but I also love light pink and other girly colors. My nails, make-up and hair will also reflect the more girly side of me. I am totally in love with braids (I'm finally learning to braid my own hair) and curls and scarves. (although with scarves the affair has been going on for over a year already)

So this is my inspiration board for the Autumn season, I hope you like it!

Style inspiration vol 1 - Audrey Hepburn

"The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows & the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years." - Audrey Hepburn

"Elegance is the only beauty that never fades." - Audrey Hepburn

"My look is attainable. Women can look like Audrey Hepburn by flipping out their hair, buying the large sunglasses, and the little sleeveless dresses." - Audrey Hepburn

I have always loved Audrey Hepburn, even before I ever saw any of her movies. She was just so beautiful and she had an impeccable taste. I wish I could dress like her, but in the end I like experimenting with different styles a little too much for it to be possible at this point.

Audrey's style is very simple: neutral tones and very basic clothes. Jeans, shirts, t-shirts, kitty heels and ballet flats construct a very chic yet a very comfortable look. Being very tall, Audrey never wore high heels, so keep those heels low if you want to go for the Audrey look!

The best thing about a look like this is of course that it's very affordable. For example, you can get simple white shirts for a very budget-friendly price, such as these two examples from H&M.

Combine the shirt with a pair of fitting jeans and cute ballet flats, tie a scarf to your hair and you have a very Audrey-inspired look. Perfect for office or just a casual run to the grocery store!

If you want to go more dressy, you will want to pick a little black dress that's suitable for your body type. Audrey herself was very thin and not very curvy, but getting the look doesn't mean that you have to go on a diet. Instead, choose clothes that are right for your body type, not the exact copy of the dress Audrey was wearing. Again, my examples are from H&M collection.

Different dresses for different body types. An hour-glass figure would perhaps like to enhance her natural curves by choosing a dress that has a fitting waistline, and of course, a v-neck is very flattering to those who have the cleavage to show off. But since we're talking about Audrey, who never even wanted to be a sex-symbol, you should opt for a dress that is classy and flattering but not too flaunting or sexy. Subtle yet sexy, you have to know where to draw the line!

For accessories choose classy and subtle, and of course, the big sunglasses are a must! Pearls and simple stud earrings are perfect, you don't want to go over-board with the bling as Audrey always preferred to be a little under-dressed opposed to over-dressed.

Scarves are also an easy way to add a touch of Audrey, or vintage in general, to any outfit. Choose a small square scarf with subtle pattern and tie it around your neck, or cover your hair from the rain with a big scarf. Perfect combined with a trench and a pair of big sunglasses, like Audrey did in Charade. (also an excellent choice of attire if you're spying on someone)

I hope you enjoyed this quick look into Audrey's style and how to get it for yourself! If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comment box and I will get to them as soon as possible!

Oh, and just for fun, here are 13 steps to looking like Audrey Hepburn!

Bikini inspiration

As I promised, here's some bikini inspiration I gathered on pinterest. Like my style generally is, my bikini inspiration is girly and cute and quite classy. I don't like loud and bold bikinis, nor do I like a bikini that is way too tiny.

A white crochet bikini is definitely on my wish list. I saw something like it at H&M but unfortunately they didn't have my size. Got to keep on looking!

In case you were wondering why I am blogging in English only, well, I have been so busy and lazy lately that writing each post in three languages is just such a hassle. I'd rather post in English only instead of posting once a week in three languages. I will get back to blogging in three languages as soon as I'm back from my vacation. We're leaving today, but I have some great things planned for you while I'm away from the keyboard... stay tuned!

Vacation outfit inspiration

So, tomorrow my aunt and I will be going to my grandparents' house to get my suitcase and clothes for me, which is why I have been doing some inspiration-seeking. As you can see, I've been drawn to comfy and cute outfits that are perfect for pretty much any location, as long as it's not freezing outdoors.

I hate packing, it's always such a hassle and I never have any idea on what to bring. It would be so much easier to just bring everything, but alas, I don't happen to own a carpet bag à la Mary Poppins!

The challenge is that I have to fit four and half weeks into one suitcase, and as if that wasn't enough, I'm also supposed to bear in mind that two of those weeks will be spent in Italy, and the rest in the Netherlands, which means that I'll have to pack both warmer and cooler clothes. And leave space for the stuff I'll buy.

I guess I'll have to make a checklist of all the things I want to take and what I need to take and do my best to fit them in the suitcase... and keep the weight under 23 kilos!

I'm already having nightmares...

--

Odotan huomista kauhunsekaisin tuntein...

Makuuhuoneinspiraatiota - Bedroom decor inspiration

--

Now that moving to my own is a bit more timely, I have been looking up all kinds of decorating inspiration, even more than usually. I have always been into decorating, and I already know what appeals to me the most what it comes to decorating, even though my style isn't exactly original or unique. I love light and neutral colors and big windows, so I think my style is the basic Nordic style... It's nice to look up all these lovely bedrooms when it's evening, knowing that I will be sleeping on the narrow sofa, as I have been doing for several nights now...

YO-laketti - Something different for my graduation

I already have the dress for my graduation party, I bought it in August from Laura Dols in Amsterdam, but as I was trying to figure out a nice hairdo to go with the traditional student's hat, I realized that the hat is not my style at all. And since I'll never actually attend the official graduation ceremony, I decided that I won't get that hat at all, I'll just get myself this cute hairpiece designed by Kirsi Nisonen. It's a modern take on the traditional hat, and it gives me so much more liberty with my hairstyle... And with my studies and graduation going a bit more unconventionally anyways, why not go different with the hat too? (although the headpiece is kinda overly hyped by now)

And for comparison, below a picture of the traditional hat:

Pitkä polkka - Long hair with fringe

You get my point.

Kuvia sitten tuloksesta (toivottavasti) ensi viikolla! :)

The last time I visited a hairdresser was in May, and I can clearly see the damage the summer and the stress have done to my hair: split and dry ends, not to even mention how regularly my hair is falling out! However I didn't want to visit a hairdresser here in Finland, since the last time I visited a hairdresser in Helsinki it cost me 80 euros (!) and I only had the damaged ends cut off and some layering done. The hairdresser simply decided to also blow-dry my hair, without mentioning that the blow-drying would cost me an extra 40 euros. So 40 euros for a haircut and 40 euros for drying my hair. You get my point.

Since D also needs a haircut we will hopefully visit the hairdresser next week, in Hoorn, since in the Netherlands a visit to the hairdresser isn't only for the rich people. No wonder why so many people in Finland just go for a pair of kitchen scissors.

And as you may have guessed from the pictures, I'm going to get a fringe again. It has only been two years since I had a fringe for the last time but hey, people say it suits me and it's a relatively easy/safe way to get a new look. Hopefully you will see some pictures of the end result next week :)
