Hoorn, my love

Scroll down for the English text

Eli ensin yleistä tietoa: Hoorn sijaistee noin 35-45 kilometriä pohjoiseen Amsterdamista IJsselmeerin (tai no oikeastaan Markermeerin) rannalla, Pohjois-Hollannin provinssissa. Asukkaita on vähän päälle 70 000.

Alunperin Hoorn perustettiin vuonna 716, kaupunkioikeudet se sai vuonna 1357. Vanhana satamakaupunkina Hoorn toimi 1600-luvulla, Kultaisella Vuosisadalla, Itä-Intian Kauppakomppanian pääkaupunkina.

Historiallisena kaupunkina Hoornin keskusta on pääasiallisesti vanhaa, 1600-luvulta peräisin olevaa arkkitehtuuria.

Kadulta löytyvät Vero Moda, Only, Vila, V&D, C&A, Apple Store jne. Noord-kadun päästä, Kleine Noordilta löytyy Hotel Petit Nord, jonka yhteydessä toimiva japanilainen ravintola Soya on ehdottomasti vierailun arvoinen jos Hoorniin sattuu joskus eksymään.

Oost (etenkin Grote Oost) on yksi Hoornin arvostetuimmista osoitteista (kuvassa 2 kuvattuna Kleine Oostilta päin) ja aina silloin tällöin kadulla on myynnissä vanhoja herenhuis-taloja tai niihin rakennettuja asuntoja. Grote Oostilla sijaitsee myös Oosterkerk. (kuva 3) Kleine Oostin päädyssä sijaitsee Oosterpoort (kuva 4 kuvattu Kleine Oostille päin kanavan toiselta puolelta) joka on osa Hoornia aikoinaan ympäröineestä puolustusmuurista.

So I'm spending this late Sunday evening posting about Hoorn, as I promised earlier. Basic information can be found on the Wikipedia but in short: Hoorn is located 35-45 kilometers North of Amsterdam, on the shores of IJsselmeer (Markermeer) in the province of North-Holland. Hoorn has a little over 70 thousand inhabitants.

Being a historically remarkable town, the Hoorn city center showcases mostly the lavish 17th century architecture. The real center of the old city is the Roode Steen, the Red Square, named after the bloodsheds Jan Pieterszoon Coen practiced in Indonesia back in the Dutch Golden Age. Thanks to the "bastard" as D very kindly referred to Coen, Hoorn flourished and the man himself has got a big statue in the middle of the Roode Steen, although the statue has been under restoration since last August. (you can see the empty pedestal in picture number 1)

Since the year 2007 there has been a traditional cheese market held at the Roode Steen every Thursday during the summers, and in the picture you can see the 17th century building designed by the famous Amsterdam-born architect Hendrick de Keyser. The building is called de Waag, it used to function as a cheese scale, and while it functions mostly as a restaurant nowadays, it is used for its old purpose during the cheese markets for the pleasure of the tourists. (and the inhabitants of Hoorn) The Westfriesmuseum can also been found at the Roode Steen.

The (historical) main streets of Hoorn's city center all start from Roode Steen, the most remarkable or, the longest, being Noord, Oost and Kerkstraat. Noord (Grote Noord) is the true shopping street of Hoorn, cars and riding a bike are forbidden, so the entire street is reserved for pedestrians. You can find Vero Moda, Only, Vila, V&D, C&A, Apple Store etc. on Grote Noord but there is unfortunately no H&M in Hoorn. One of my favorites shops is the candy shop Jamin that you can find also in Amsterdam, for example. In the end of the Kleine Noord, you can find the hotel Petit Nord, and the Japanese restaurant Soya that is very well worth a visit if you ever end up in Hoorn.

Oost (especially Grote Oost) is one the most prestigious addresses in Hoorn, and every now and then one can spot a 'for sale' plaque on the door or window of a gorgeous herenhuis. (Grote Oost from the Kleine Oost can be seen in the picture number 2) The Oosterkerk (can be seen in the picture number 3) is also located on the Grote Oost. In the end of the Kleine Oost you can find the Oosterpoort, an old gate that was once part of the old defense wall surrounding Hoorn. (picture 4 taken from the other side of the canal)

I've concentrated on telling about Hoorn from my own point of view, showcasing my "hoods" or more like D's "hoods" because there is enough over-all information for tourists and the like all over the Internet. I know the post is a little concise but I'll be more than happy to answer any questions you might have... Tomorrow D and I are off to Amsterdam to see the Noordermaarkt and maybe find some nice vintage pieces. The camera is coming along so I'll be making a post about Noordermaarkt at some point...

Puuteriunelma - Powder pink dream

Scroll down for the English text

I should be going to bed already but D is still working on some school stuff and I made a huge mistake to browse the H&M online shop... My previous order arrived on Wednesday, so I suppose one could call me a shopaholic for ordering the dress in the picture.

For my defense I have to say that I have been drooling over that/a similar dress for months already, ever since I saw Hertta from Lilou's Crush wear it on couple occasions and now couple days ago I spotted it on Dam Style. Life is cruel, as I hadn't found the skirt despite of serious attempts until tonight. D of course couldn't understand how I could bawl my eyes out over a skirt, there'll be a similar one in the stores next month, right? Well, what if there isn't?

All reasoning was lost on me, I simply had to have that skirt... Don't I have the most amazing fiancé ever <3

Matkalaukun pakkaaminen, yäks! - Packing my suitcase, yuck!

Scroll down for the English text

Kuva: weheartit

Olen toivoton tapaus...

It might not come as a surprise to the people who know me, but I just can't pack my suitcase. Simply put, I suck at it, and I always end up packing my suitcase so full that I will have to keep my fingers crossed that the weight won't change with couple hundred grams on the way to the airport. You can say goodbye to organized packing when it comes to me, my packing technique is the classic "I'll just stuff everything in and sit/jump on the suitcase when it doesn't close."

One very good reason for my inability to pack is the fact that I can never make up my mind about what to pack. Which clothes, which shoes, which jewelry to bring, it's impossible to decide, so it's easier to just bring most of the contents of my wardrobe even if I don't really need even half of it. On top of all I always leave the packing to the last moment (as you can see, I rather spend my time blogging about how difficult it is to pack the suitcase) and then I'll end up crying when the stuffed suitcase won't co-operate.

I'm hopeless...

If you thought that the quality of my pictures couldn't get any worse, you were wrong. A photo taken with my phone from the mirror must be some kind of bottom line of lameness, but hey, you'll get much nicer photos next week. Only three more nights to sleep and I'm off to the airport, can't complain.

Today I was visiting my parents and my siblings, and after the visit I met my friends. Cakes and tea, it was really nice, and all in all the whole day was very pleasant. The outfit was perfect for the day: classy yet relaxed and comfortable.

Pitkä polkka - Long hair with fringe

Scroll down for the English text

You get my point.

Kuvia sitten tuloksesta (toivottavasti) ensi viikolla! :)

The last time I visited a hairdresser was in May, and I can clearly see the damage the summer and the stress have done to my hair: split and dry ends, not to even mention how regularly my hair is falling out! However I didn't want to visit a hairdresser here in Finland, since the last time I visited a hairdresser in Helsinki it cost me 80 euros (!) and I only had the damaged ends cut off and some layering done. The hairdresser simply decided to also blow-dry my hair, without mentioning that the blow-drying would cost me an extra 40 euros. So 40 euros for a haircut and 40 euros for drying my hair. You get my point.

Since D also needs a haircut we will hopefully visit the hairdresser next week, in Hoorn, since in the Netherlands a visit to the hairdresser isn't only for the rich people. No wonder why so many people in Finland just go for a pair of kitchen scissors.

And as you may have guessed from the pictures, I'm going to get a fringe again. It has only been two years since I had a fringe for the last time but hey, people say it suits me and it's a relatively easy/safe way to get a new look. Hopefully you will see some pictures of the end result next week :)
